AI CMO tools for early-stage startups

AI CMO platforms are good at producing marketing work and bad at removing it. If your problem is output volume, they help. If your problem is not knowing which of thirty things matters, a queue of thirty drafted items is the problem wearing a different hat.

The pitch is consistent across the category, and it is a good pitch: paste your URL, we read your site, we build a profile of your product, then a set of agents go to work on SEO, content, social, communities and outreach. You get a feed of opportunities with the work already drafted, queued for your approval.

This is a real, shipping product shape. Several companies do it competently, typically for somewhere around a hundred dollars a month. If you have been putting off marketing because writing the assets is the bit you hate, it will genuinely produce assets.

What the category is good at

  • Ingestion. URL in, profile out, in under two minutes. This is table stakes now and most of them do it well.
  • Coverage. Many surfaces watched at once, which is more than you were doing manually.
  • Drafting. The blank page problem goes away. There is always something in the queue to react to.

Where it stops

The honest criticism of this category is not that the output is bad. It is that the output is work, and work was not the scarce thing.

They generate work. They do not remove it. The founder is still the prioritiser and still the analyst.

Nothing in the queue tells you which item matters

Thirty drafted items with no opinion about their relative value is a triage job you now have to do, on top of the job you already could not do. If you could reliably pick the one that matters, you would not have needed a marketing tool in the first place.

The value therefore depends entirely on one question: is approving the drafts faster than doing the work yourself? Sometimes yes. But approving the wrong work quickly is not progress, and the platform has no view on which is which.

Nothing measures whether last week produced anything

Every platform in this category counts output. Almost none of them close the loop on outcome for your specific product: did the fifteen approved items produce a single signup, and if not, which channel do we stop?

Without that, month three is the same as month one with more artefacts lying around, and the two jobs you are worst at, deciding and evaluating, are still yours.

The queue has its own failure mode

A feed you are behind on stops being a tool and becomes a debt. This is the same dynamic that drives churn in alert-based products: the volume is the feature until the week you cannot keep up, and then the volume is the reason you cancel.

Which problem have you actually got?

Two honest questions, and they point in different directions.

  • “I know what to do and I do not have time to make the assets.” Buy an agent platform. That is precisely what it is for, and this page is not trying to talk you out of it.
  • “I do not know which of these things is worth my next hour.” More drafted work makes this worse, not better. What you need is something willing to pick, and to be wrong in a way you can measure.

There is a third case worth naming, because it is the most common one among founders who have shipped and stalled: the bottleneck is not marketing output at all. It is that a stranger cannot tell what your product does, or there is no path from the page to a first action worth taking. Diagnosing that first is free, and skipping it is how people spend three months publishing into a funnel that was broken at the top.

What we built instead

Do This Next takes the opposite position on almost every design decision in the category:

  • One action, not a feed. Exactly one prioritised next move at a time, with the reason it beat the runners up. There is no queue to fall behind on.
  • A success measure attached to every move, written before you do it, so the result is a fact rather than a feeling.
  • Outcomes fed back into the next decision. What worked and what did not becomes an input, which is the only mechanism by which advice gets better over time.
  • Evidence that traces to something we fetched. Claims about your site or your competitors carry the quote they came from, and where we are inferring, the card says so.
  • We draft, you send. No autonomous posting anywhere, under any circumstances. Your reputation is not ours to spend.

It is also a fifth of the category price, at 19 a month, because it is doing considerably less: one decision, well reasoned, instead of ten agents producing in parallel. The Product Check is free and needs no account, and the first complete action is free once you have one.
